Developer prosecuted for asbestos failings

A Nottinghamshire property developer who pleaded guilty to exposing employees to asbestos has been given an eight-month suspended prison sentence and been ordered to pay fines and costs of £100,000.

Glazing contractor and School fined for exposing workers to asbestos

A Birmingham glazing contractor and a local school have been fined for failing to manage refurbishment works properly and exposing workers to asbestos

Birmingham Glass Services Ltd and Equitas Academies Trust, the owner and operator of Aston Manor Academy, were jointly prosecuted by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) after an investigation found they put employees at unnecessary risk in the incident on 6 June 2012.

Contractors Exposed to Asbestos

A fertiliser manufacturing firm has been fined after around 50 workers were exposed to asbestos at its plant in Cheshire.

Asbestos was discovered during the refurbishment of a 50-metre-high industrial furnace (known as the Primary Reformer) at GrowHow UK Ltd's plant in January 2011. Contractors had been demolishing brickwork and insulation boards for two days, using hammers, chisels and crow bars, before a bricklayer raised concerns about the presence of asbestos and this was confirmed when material from the site was taken for analysis.

Council and Decorating Firm Prosecuted for Asbestos Failings

Warwickshire Council and Birmingham Decorating Firm Prosecuted for Asbestos Failings

North Warwickshire Borough Council and a decorating firm from Birmingham have been prosecuted after exposing workers to asbestos.

Leamington Spa Magistrates' Court was told that North Warwickshire council was refurbishing a local community centre in Fillongley on 13 March 2012 when it sent Intal Decorators Limited to remove asbestos insulation board.

Changes in Asbestos Regulations – CAR 2012

Changes to the Control of Asbestos Regulations have come into force (6th April 2012) following modification to bring the UK legislation in to line with the minimum standards of the EU Asbestos Worker Protection Directive.

The main change involves the current "Non-Licensable" work on asbestos. This category represents the vast majority of all work carried out on asbestos within the UK, affecting some 1.8m workers annually. The "Licensed" category of work on asbestos – affecting some 9,000 workers - is not intended to be affected.
